Sony has launched the PlayStation 4 console in India for Rs 39,990. The Xbox One competitor will be available in stores from January 6, 2014, making it a very happy new year for gamers in the country. We have already seen and heard almost everything there is to know about the console. Based on early reviews, it would seem the lack of exclusive PS4 games is a bit of a problem. One review went on to say that the PS4 is a gaming-centric console (unlike the entertainment-focussed Xbox One), without any game to recommend it.
As for the specs, it runs on a low power x86-64 AMD "Jaguar" with 8 cores that offers a theoretical peak performance of 1.8 TFLOPS and also has 8GB GDDR5 RAM, 500GB HDD (user-replaceable), Wi Fi (no ac support unfortunately) and a Blu ray player. Sony has also revamped PlayStation 4's controller drastically. The DualShock 4 has the ability to share videos. Some gamers are reporting that the controller has high power consumption and short battery life, with the video-editing features of the console being limited. But it should offer better feedback and ergonomics if reviews are anything to go by. If you are worried about the build quality and early bugs in the PS4, Sony has announced a less than one percent failure rate for the new console. It’s offering replacements if you shiny new PS4 isn’t working as advertised.
As far as competition with Xbox One is concerned, the PS4 has got out the gates fastest for Indian gamers and will have an obvious advantage over the Microsoft console. Globally too, PS4 has outpaced Xbox One in terms of sales, hitting the 2 million mark in just two weeks after a fantastic opening day. Indian gamers should add to that, but the biggest obstacle for Sony would be the high price, especially given the light shone on the lack of games initially. If Sony can get past that hurdle and assure gamers of timely releases (180 new games are said to be in development for the new console) in the next year, it would recover from the slower start in the new-generation console wars.
