Nokia has released the long-awaited Lumia Black software update for the Nokia Lumia 1020 Windows Phone handset, which adds the ability to shoot images in the RAW format.
The primary distinguishing feature of the Lumia 1020 is its impressive PureView camera sensor. Sat behind a Zeiss lens, the 41 megapixel sensor - first seen on the Symbian-based PureView 808 but here updated with optical image stabilization (OIS) - can capture huge resolution images or 'supersample' them down to eight megapixels in order to largely eliminate picture noise.
The phone's picture-taking capabilities as such that Nokia has previously positioned the device as a real alternative to dedicated cameras, but it lacked one major feature: all images were saved as compressed JPEGs, while professional photographers prefer to capture in RAW - so-named as it stores the raw output of the sensor, maximizing detail for later processing and editing.
Installing the Lumia Black update on the Lumia 1020 adds in support for RAW DNG images for the first time - a feature the Lumia 1520 already possesses. The update also adds improved battery monitoring, support for the Low Energy mode of Bluetooth 4.0, a Glance update which adds temperature and pedometer readouts to the lock screen, and various stability fixes for the underlying platform.
The update is available to download now from Nokia's support site, free of charge. An update for other models in the Lumia range is promised for the near future.
