Businesses and bandwidth-hungry consumers in Peterborough will soon be able to tap into gigabit-speed internet connectivity, after plans to run an extensive fibre broadband network around the UK city were made public.

Digital fibre company CityFibre has reported it has signed a partnership agreement with Peterborough City Council at a ceremony held in the Town Hall, which will pave the way for a city-wide fibre network.

The firm said that the roll-out that will benefit Peterborough and transform it into a ‘Gigabit’ city.

CityFibre said it will create the network using its pure fibre networks, letting Internet Service Providers deliver ultra-high speed connectivity services to local government, businesses and consumers as well as by mobile operators requiring fibre base-station connectivity to enable next generation 4G mobile services.

The move will provide both businesses and consumers with the "huge benefits" of ultra-fast broadband connectivity, Greg Mesch, chief executive officer at CityFibre, said of the deal.

The roll-out should begin next spring and will see 90km of core fibre infrastructure deployed throughout the city, bringing the benefits of gigabit speeds to key districts, data centres and mobile base-stations, as well as schools, hospitals and other community sites. This first phase is expected to be completed within 18 months.
