No Apple television set until at least 2015, but A7-powered set-top box could arrive next year

Apple fans waiting for the arrival of the firm's long-anticipated first television set will have to wait for at least two more years, experts have predicted.

Reiterating earlier reports that Apple is concentrating on its core tablet and smartphone product lines, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo told A MacRumours that he does not think Apple will produce a television set until at least 2015.

He was quoted in the same report as saying that the US tech firm could unveil a new iteration of its existing Apple TV set top box that incorporates its new A7 processor sometime next year.

"We expect Apple to launch a new version of the Apple TV with an A7 processor in 2014, and we forecast 2014 shipments to total 8.2m units. Shipment growth will be limited unless Apple is able to integrate more TV content, services and its App Store," Kuo said.

The analyst explained that costs associated with creating a viable supply chain for television set production is a "major obstacle" for Apple's plans to enter the television market. Another obstacle is thought to be issues with the procurement of additional content to create an ecosystem which would be marketed to Apple TV owners.

"We believe the slowdown in Apple TV shipments suggests Apple faces challenges in integrating TV content and services," he added.
