Google News mobile redesigned with cards-based UI, themes and layout options

Despite the number of news apps on the Play Store, Google News is the go-to option for many people. However, if you have been turned off by the design, get ready for a slew of changes in that regard. Soon, Google will giving the age-old UI a facelift, with a focus on improved navigation, personalisation and desktop-like feature set. Google is also trying to make the layout consistent across various platforms such as desktop, tablet and smartphone. The Google News mobile site will now feature story cards, which is fast becoming the default UI look for Google's apps and services. The detailed cards can be viewed with a dark or light theme. Users can select a densely packed view with just the headlines or detailed article cards with a more extensive preview of the content. This flexibility will come in handy for those just looking to scan the headlines.

New design and features come to Google News

Cards for News too

In an official blog post, Mayuresh Saoji, Product Manager, Google News and Social said, “Increasingly people are reading News 'on the go' and using their smartphones to keep abreast of the latest happenings around the globe. Over the next few days Google News readers on Android and iOS devices will start to see a beautiful new version of the mobile web app that will provide an improved overall experience resulting in a kind of real time news desk for you on your phone.”The mobile site now offers simplified navigation to any section, with a drawer sitting under the Google News icon with all available sections. The mobile version will also let the user access weather and Editor’s Pick features, just like its desktop counterpart. However, there are no videos as yet, which sit besides articles on the desktop version. These changes will first be rolling out in the US, followed by other international editions. Users can view the changes by visiting Google News using Chrome or Safari on either Android or iOS devices.
