Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV boasts 148mpg fuel economy, 44g/km emissions

Mitsubishi has confirmed that its upcoming Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) will be exempt from the London Congestion Charge as well as vehicle excise duty thanks to impressive efficiency figures.

Prior to the 1st of July all hybrid vehicles received an automatic exemption to the London Congestion Charge, as well as an exemption from vehicle excise duty if their carbon dioxide emissions were under 99g per kilometre driven. Since that date, however, more stringent rules have been in force which requires hybrids to have carbon dioxide emissions lower than 75g per kilometre driven and the ability to travel more than 10 miles on electric power alone.

Those two criteria left some early-generation hybrids out, but Mitsubishi is keen to confirm that its upcoming four-wheel drive Outlander PHEV will be exempt. "Everyone at Mitsubishi is incredibly excited about the arrival of the PHEV version of Outlander" crowed Mitsubishi's Toby Marshall of the news. "With so much already going for it, the fact that it now qualifies for Congestion Charge exemption is great news."

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been granted exemption thanks to a pure electric range of 32 miles with an electric-only top speed of 75mph, rising to 514 miles with a significantly higher top speed in hybrid mode where the electric motor is used to augment the more traditional combustion engine. Overall, the Outlander PHEV has official efficiency figures of 148mpg in the combined cycle and emits a claimed 44g/km of carbon dioxide - exceeding the requirements for exemption.

With official exemption now confirmed, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will launch as one of the largest vehicles able to enter and leave the London Congestion Charge Zone without charge. The Outlander PHEV is due to go on sale early next year, priced at around £35,000 including a government grant of £5,000 on low-emission vehicles.
