Nokia lifts curtain on free Netflix for new Lumia customers

Nokia has launched an early Christmas promotion that will see it give away free subscriptions to Netflix, in a bid to tempt UK shoppers to snap up its Windows Phone smartphones.

Anyone buying the company's flagship 41-megapixel Lumia 1020 through Vodafone will qualify for a twelve month free subscription to the on-demand service. According to a report from the Financial Times, people "familiar with the terms" of the partnership have suggested it is being funded predominantly by Nokia, rather than the network provider.

Phones4U, meanwhile, will be offering a six-month subscription to Netflix on the Nokia Windows smartphones that it stocks, including the Lumia 615, Lumia 925 and Lumia 1020.

Nokia has attempted to incentivise hardware sales with free content deals in the past, but with mixed results. An executive at one operator pointed to an ineffective deal a few years ago that offered a free music download service.

Additional promotions for Nokia's Windows Phone line up will apparently also include a trade-in deal that encourages customers to trade up their digital cameras for the latest Lumia handset, to spur interest in the run up to the Christmas sales.
