Sales of Nintendo's Wii U console have increased dramatically following numerous price cuts and the launch of a limited-edition Legend of Zelda tie-in bundle pack.
A next-generation successor to the highly popular Wii, Nintendo's Wii U had a troubled launch. A limited selection of release titles and consumer confusion as to whether the console was a true next-generation system or merely a tweaked Wii caused initially slow sales, which dropped still further when the company failed to release any must-have games. A £50 price-cut was quickly followed by another, dropping the cost of the device by £100 from its recommended retail price, but failed to convince consumers to pick the device up - leading to supermarket giant Asda removing the console from its shelves.
Things seem to be looking up now though. Sales figures released by Nintendo suggest that the company's official cut to the recommended retail price, which took place separate to the temporary £100 discount offered by selected UK retailers, has resulted in a considerable improvement in sales. Coupled with the launch of the limited-edition bundle which included The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, sales have increased by more than 200 per cent.
The much-needed sales boost comes as the console is about to enter its most difficult period. Next month, rivals Sony and Microsoft will launch the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which will put considerable pressure on Nintendo to continue its growth in the face of stiff competition.
