Leaked document hints at high Samsung Galaxy Gear return rates

Samsung’s foray into the wearable category, the Galaxy Gear, may not be reaping the results the company was expecting, according to a new report from Geek.com. While referring to a leaked document, the source claims that over 30 percent of the company’s wrist gadgets are being returned after sale at Best Buy locations in the US. The gadget is currently priced at $299 on the company's online store, and is priced at Rs 22,990 in India. The document came with a break down for the rollout dates of the device across providers along with growing concerns about the significantly higher than normal return rate for the accessory. The source states that Best Buy locations across the US come with the 'Samsung Experience', a mini-store that is manned by Samsung employees aiming at giving customers information to pick the “right” device while shopping. Samsung, according to the source, is asking its employees on site to help figure out why this might be happening.

The Galaxy Gear may be faced with high return rates

A quick look at the specs sheet reveals that the Galaxy Gear is powered by an 800MHz processor coupled with 512MB of RAM. The wearable device works in tandem with a smartphone via Bluetooth connectivity. Through this, users can access notifications for applications like emails and text messages directly on the screen of the gadget, saving them the time need to get their handsets out of their pockets or bags. The South Korean company, in an effort to increase the reach of the device, recently announced that the device will be compatible with a bunch of other company handsets, including the current flagship, the Galaxy S4. At the time of launch, the company had announced that the gadget was compatible only with the Note 3 and the recently launched Galaxy Note 10.1. Now, apart from these devices, the Galaxy Gear will also be supported by the Note 2, the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy S4 Active after the latest Android 4.3 update gets rolled out for these devices. It is tough to estimate, though, whether this update will bring down the current return rate that the Galaxy Gear is faced with.
