HTC is apparently working with chip-maker Qualcomm to develop a new radio chip for its smartphones, including the flagship HTC One, in order to avoid a sales ban in the US.
The HTC One has been well received by customers, but the company's competitors haven't been quite so happy. Nokia in particular has been on the offensive, claiming that a raft of HTC's smartphone products infringe a pair of patents it holds on boosting signal quality in a mobile device. HTC denied the claims, but the US International Trade Commission (ITC) upheld the complaint in a preliminary ruling that could see HTC devices banned from sale in the US.
To avoid the ban, the Wall Street Journal has said HTC is working with Qualcomm to redesign the radio chip used in its allegedly infringing handsets in order to avoid use of Nokia-patented technologies. This would include replacing the chip used in the HTC One, which is shared with the older devices named in Nokia's claim against the company.
The judge's decision comes just months after Nokia received a similar ruling in the Netherlands claiming that the microphone used in the device was a proprietary design created exclusively for Nokia's Lumia range of Windows Phone handsets.
HTC has not commented on how it plans to resolve this latest case with Nokia, beyond stating that it will "keep its alternative plans ready to ensure no business disruption".
