GTA 5 Online bugs continue, GTA$ microtransactions delayed

Rockstar has announced that it is delaying the full launch of its GTA$ real-money purchase option in Grand Theft Auto 5, following the issues it has experienced with the launch of the GTA Online multiplayer mode.

The latest in Rockstar's long-running crime simulator series, which started back in 1997 with the top-down GTA when the company was known as DMA Design, GTA 5 promised to revolutionise the multiplayer aspects of the series. Although single-player only at launch, the free GTA Online add-on should have brought support for up to 16 players, with races, heists and even sports events to keep things interesting.

The launch of GTA Online has not gone smoothly, however. The massive popularity of the title, which looks set to become one of the best-selling games in history, has resulted in the company's multiplayer servers becoming clogged with users. Coupled with game-breaking bugs, gamers aren't getting the smooth experience that was promised.

Rockstar has said it is "working around the clock" to resolve the issues, but they are having a knock-on effect. The company's plan to launch a microtransaction system which will allow players to swap real-world money for in-game currency has been delayed until the GTA Online issues are all resolved.

"For the time being and until we have been able to get everybody access to GTA Online and things are running smoothly, we have disabled the option of purchasable GTA$ cash packs," a Rockstar spokesperson told players via the company's support site. "Players can however keep on earning GTA$ by pulling off Jobs and other profitable gameplay activities rather than purchasing cash packs".

The company is also working on resolving various other issues, having identified a problem with Sony's PlayStation Network servers that contributed to GTA Online inaccessibility, but various problems still remain with players struggling to complete the tutorial mission and the game crashing at random points.
