HTC has officially revealed the HTC One Max, a 5.9in smartphone with an integrated fingerprint sensor - the first Android handset to do so following Apple debuted the technology in the iPhone 5S.

As its name suggests, the HTC One Max takes the unibody aluminium design found in the HTC One and HTC One Mini, but increases the 1080p LCD screen to a whopping 5.9in. That makes it larger than Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 but still dwarfed by Sony's Xperia Z Ultra.

Major changes include a removable back cover, which hides a microSD card slot for expanding the 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, and the addition of a fingerprint sensor. This can be used to unlock the device, or launch up to three different apps depending on which finger you press it with.

The One Max re-uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor found in the standard One, which is a quad-core chip running at 1.7GHz paired with 2GB of RAM. It also includes HTC's UltraPixel rear camera, which has 2.0 micron pixels and a 1/3in sensor which should be able to capture more detail in low light than a regular smartphone camera sensor.

The 4G-ready handset comes with a 3,300mAh battery that should help keep it juiced up despite the huge screen, but HTC will also sell a Power Flip Case which adds a second 1,150mAH battery for even longer stretches between charging.

The latest 4.3 version of Android Jelly Bean will power HTC's Sense UI, which has been significantly revised in version 5.5 with more customisation for the BlinkFeed interface. It can now pull articles from Google+ and Instagram for the first time.

The HTC One Max is due to launch in the UK by the end of October, although there's currently no word on an exact date - or how much the giant handset will set you back.
