Apple is apparently working on a range of new products and updates to existing ones for 2014, including a 12in Retina MacBook pro and a budget all-in-one iMac, according to a new report.
Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in a note to investors that Apple is looking to capture more of the mid-range market share by releasing reduced-cost variants of its all-in-one iMac systems - using the same two-device tactic as it is attempting in the mobile space with the recently-launched flagship iPhone 5S and cheaper iPhone 5C.
The report, which was brought to our attention by AppleInsider, didn't provide details, but the reduced-cost iMacs are expected to include last-generation processors, lower capacity storage and a significantly less sleek design. This should help to drive the cost down and allow Apple to target those who cannot afford the high-end models it currently sells.
It's not the first time Apple has targeted the more cost-sensitive market with an all-in-one. The company's eMac series, which built the computer into the shell of an old-fashioned CRT monitor, were aimed at budget-conscious and educational purchasers. Since moving to iMac models based around Intel processors, however, there have been no specific cost-reduced models released.
Apple, as is usual for the company, has refused to comment on the rumours.
