Carphone Warehouse drops its cheapest Android tablet to just £50

The UK budget tablet market is seriously crowded right now, with Carphone Warehouse being the latest to join the fray, having cut the price of its Avoca 7 slate to £49.

It was already inexpensive when it launched at £99, but the new price undercuts rivals like the Tesco Hudl and Argos MyTablet by almost half.

However, eager customers shouldn't expect Nexus 7 levels of performance or build quality. The Avoca 7 is an unabashed entry-level device with a 1GHz Rockchip processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory and a 7in, 800x480 resolution display. There is at least a microSD card slot for adding extra capacity, but there's no rear-facing camera - you have to make do with the 0.3-megapixel front webcam for photos.

The 350g device runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean , which is at least reasonably up to date. It's only one step behind the latest 4.3 build running on Google's own Nexus tablets, but there's no telling when it will receive software updates - either to 4.3 or the upcoming 4.4 KitKat.

Graham Stapleton, Carphone Warehouse's CEO told The Daily Mail "We know over a third of tablet purchases are for children and family use but that one of the main barriers to not buying a tablet is cost.

"Our Android 7" tablet smashes right through the previous lowest priced tablets and is perfect for families and anyone wanting a modern, portable tablet at a bargain price."

According to the Carphone Warehouse website the low price is a time limited offer, which is set to end on the 4th of November. The Avoca 7 is only available in stores too, so you'll have to head down to your local branch if you want to pick one up in time for Christmas.
