Apple rumoured to be slashing iPhone 5C production

Apple is reportedly slashing production of its iPhone 5C handsets, following poor sales compared to its flagship iPhone 5S.

The iPhone 5C launched following rumours that Apple was planning to target the mid-range smartphone market, currently dominated by devices running rival Google's Android operating system. Some of those rumours proved true, in particular the multicolour polycarbonate plastic casing in place of the aluminium and glass of its flagship devices, but the iPhone 5C is considerably more expensive than expected.

The result, unsurprisingly, has been poor sales. Those with the money are paying the small amount extra required to upgrade to the far more powerful iPhone 5S, or saving even more money on a second-user iPhone 5 or older device. The handset's uptake abroad, particularly in China where Apple had hoped to gain considerable market share, has also been slow.

As a result, the company is apparently cutting production of the handset in half. According to sources speaking to Chinese-language site CTechCN, Apple is reducing production volume of the iPhone 5C from 300,000 units daily to just 150,000 units.

Such a dramatic drop in production volume suggests a significant over-estimation of demand, but the news isn't all bad for Apple. By freeing up factory space, it will be able to better meet the high demand for its iPhone 5S handset and reduce waiting times for its customers.
