Argos has announced the MyTablet own-brand Android tablet, aimed primarily at children and designed to compete with Tesco's recently-launched Hudl.

The 7in MyTablet is built around a dual-core 1.6GHz processor with 8GB of storage, a micro-SD card slot for up to 32GB of extra capacity and a 1,024x600 resolution display. Unlike most budget tablets, the MyTablet has a metal chassis, which will be available in pink or silver at launch. A two megapixel camera can be found on the rear, with a VGA-resolution camera at the front.

Designed for children, the tablet includes Google's Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system, extra parental controls and several pre-loaded applications including BBC iPlayer, Angry Birds, Twitter, Facebook and an as-yet unconfirmed eReader package. Additional software can be installed from the usual Android sources.

At £99.99, the MyTablet is £20 cheaper than Tesco's Hudl but comes with considerably reduced specifications. The Hudl has a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 16GB of storage, and a higher-resolution 1,440x990 display.

The MyTablet will launch in Argos stores and via the company's website tomorrow. "We know that tablets will feature heavily on Christmas lists this year," the company's managing director John Walden said at the unveiling. "At just £99.99 the Argos MyTablet is highly competitive with a great specification, and fits neatly in the range of tablets we have on offer".
