Amazon reportedly joins hands with HTC to make new smartphones

While Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer HTC may be going through a rough patch right now, news of a possible partnership may turn out to be the welcome boost it needs. Financial Times is now claiming that HTC may be working with Amazon to roll out a new line-up of smartphones that could be seen on the online retailer’s stores as early as next year. There is no confirmation that such a product will indeed hit the market for sure, though. The source clearly points out that the launch timeline for one of these devices was referred to once before, without anything coming of it. There is also no guarantee that Amazon will will be the one selling the handset, if it comes out. The source claims that atleast three different smartphones are currently in development, but one of the HTC-made devices is apparently close to completion.

Earlier reports had hinted at Amazon working on atleast one smartphone which would make use of a new 3D interface. Amazon, however, has clearly stated that it will not be releasing a handset this year, according to the Verge, corroborating the 2014 timeline that the source report is claiming. Both companies declined to comment about this, but HTC’s Chief of Marketing Benjamin Ho said, “We have been very focused on building our own brand, but we have also been very open to co-branding and collaborating with carriers and other technology brands.” While the news is definitely big for Amazon, it holds even greater potential for HTC. The Taiwanese company reported its first-ever quarterly loss earlier this month, an unfortunate milestone, as it struggles to find footing against the fierce competition. The potential is undoubtedly there, though, as the phone maker first earned its reputation making hardware for other companies. And the company’s current flagship, the HTC One, proves that the Taiwanese smartphone maker is still capable of producing some really good hardware.
