TRAI recommends country-wide MNP within six months

Telcom regulatory body TRAI now recommends that MNP (mobile number portability) should be fully implemented across the nation within six months, according to The EconomicTimes. With mobile number portability, a subscriber can retain his mobile telephone number when he moves from one service provider to another. However, it is presently restricted within a service area. By implementing pan-India MNP, subscribers can retain their numbers even when they move from one region to another. For example, subscribers in Andhra Pradesh will be able to port their numbers to Karnataka, Maharashtra, Haryana and so on.

It is said to benefit telcos like Idea Cellular, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone that have previously benefitted from circle level MNP. MNP was implemented in January 2011 and roughly 84.26 million subscribers opted for it by the end of January 2013 (a report by TRAI). TRAI has also ensured that telcos do not deny MNP to its customers. TRAI is also said to have finalised a method for processing cross-circle porting requests after holding consultations with the industry. Reportedly, a carrier that receives a porting request from a circle should forward it to the MNP provider that oversees that circle. The future porting requests of that number, be it within a circle or to another circle, will be handled by the same MNP provider. This will lead to no interconnection between the MNP providers and eventually minimise the costs for installing the system. TRAI has also asked the telecom department to make changes in the existing MNP licences as well as to its own instructions meted out in May 2009.
