PS4 will allow HDMI video capture for games after all

Sony's Tokyo Game Show keynote conference brought some welcome news to YouTube uploaders planning on buying a PS4 - the upcoming console will support HDMI video capture for games.

Unlike the current generation PlayStation 3, which treats games in the same way as Blu-ray films by enabling HDCP copy protection, the PS4 won't encrypt its HDMI output when playing games. That means anyone with an HDMI capture card will be able to record footage of their exploits, ready to edit and upload to social networks and YouTube.

That's on top of the share functionality built into the console, which automatically buffers the last 15 minutes of gameplay ready to be shared to YouTube at any time, and direct live streaming to Twitch TV.

Because the PS3 had a component video output, video content creators could get around the HDCP limit without investing in a copy protection stripper device. The PS4, meanwhile, only has HDMI, so there were concerns that video capture would be severely restricted without breaking copyright laws.

The news came from Sony tweeter Brad Douglas and confirmed by Developer relations head Adam Boyes early this morning following the TGS keynote.

It will come as great for anyone that creates gaming content on YouTube, as they will still be able to edit their videos down rather than upload direct feed footage potentially full of mistakes, spoilers or expletives.
