Yotaphone dual-screen Android smartphone launches in Europe

The distinctively styled dual-screen Yotaphone smartphone has launched in Europe today. The Android smartphone, which has a regular LCD screen on one side and an eInk display on the other, will be available initially Russia, Austria, France, Spain and Germany.

Powered by a previous generation Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and 2GB of RAM, the Yotaphone runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and is distinctly mid-range in terms of specifications. However, focusing purely on numbers would miss the point; according to the manufacturer, the YotaPhone will have "7-10 times" the battery life of other smartphones thanks to its eInk display.

"By including a second screen that uses electronic paper display technology, users have access to the information they want and need on a continual basis without having to wake up their phone. The technology also preserves smartphone battery power," Yotaphone said.

eInk had to adapt its technology to fit the 4.3in screen and Singapore manufacturer Hi-P had to work with the Yotaphone hardware team to develop the handset chassis, which holds six antennas on the outer rim. It's also the first smartphone to use Corning's Gorilla Glass 3 toughened glass.

Initial sales of the devices will be from the company's online store Yotapone.com and from December it will retail in stores in Russia and Germany.

By the end of Q1 2014, YotaPhone will be sold in 20 CIS, European and Middle East markets, according to its manufacturers. It is expected to begin shipping to UK buyers next month.
