Microsoft has announced that the first games to be published under its ID@Xbox programme will arrive on the Xbox One in early 2014.
Part of an initiative to boost the quantity of games available on the company's Xbox Live platform, ID@Xbox is aimed at getting independent developers up and running as quickly as possible on the Xbox One. The programme allows developers to self-publish titles directly to the Xbox One Marketplace, without having to go through the same number of hoops indies publishing on the Xbox 360 had to suffer. Initially, the programme is limited to professionals with a track record of shipped games, but Microsoft has confirmed a longer-term plan of allowing anyone with a retail Xbox One console to design and publish their own content.
At launch, fans of indie games were disappointed to find that the Xbox One has no ID@Xbox titles available, but Microsoft has said that will change early next year. "I think it will be early in the New Year, in the first three months," Chris Charla, director of the ID@Xbox programme, told Edge in an interview. "I would say closer to the third month. In terms of how many games there will be, it’s hard to say, because they’re still in development."
The release of the ID@Xbox games early year should make the first few months of 2014 an exciting time for early adopters of the console: as well as the indie games, the console is also set to receive original TV shows including a long-awaited episodic series based on the Halo franchise and directed by Steven Spielberg.
