Apple has updated OS X Mavericks to version 10.9.1, as evidence mounts that the company is preparing to launch its latest Mac Pro desktop machines.
The update fixes multiple bugs and issues with Apple's latest operating system release, including a series of nasty bugs when using the Mail app client with Google's Gmail service. Users who have customised their Gmail settings will no longer confuse the software.
Additional tweaks to Mail.app include improvements to the reliability of Search, which would sometimes refuse to return results prior to the update, and to Smart Mailboxes, the company's system for automatically displaying search results as a separate mailbox in the app. A bug which prevented contact groups from working correctly in Mail under OS X 10.9 has also been addressed in the patch.
Further changes to the operating system include improved support for emoji characters, previous to which their presence in a string of text would prevent the VoiceOver accessibility software from reading the sentence aloud. Safari, too, gets a minor fix with background updating of Shared Links in the Safari Sidebar. Beyond these tweaks, OS X 10.9.1 sadly doesn't add any new features to the platform.
The update, free for all OS X 10.9 Mavericks users, comes as rumours mount that Apple Stores in the UK are receiving stock of the Mac Pro ahead of an impending launch. Designed for use as a high-end workstation, the Mac Pro boasts impressive specifications and a unique cylindrical design - but while Apple has suggested a December launch, the company has yet to provide a firm date for UK availability.
