The polling has come to an end in Delhi finally and it was THE topic of conversation amongst Indians on most social networks, especially Twitter. Throughout the day, hashtags such as #Vote4Sheila, #AAPSweepingDelhi and #NOTA dominated the trending topics throughout the day not just in Delhi, but in other parts of the country too. Going by the number of tweets for each party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) emerged as a clear winner on the social networking front.

As far as hashtags in support of political parties go, AAP has been sweeping the trends (figuratively speaking) in the run up to the election. Election day was no different. According to data collected through Topsy Analytics, #AAPSweepingDelhi has accrued over 53,000 tweets today alone. #Vote4AamAadmiParty, the rather long hashtag, trended on the number one position in India for a few hours and saw over 55,000 tweets with it.

In contrast, #DrSahab4Delhi, a trend started by supporters of BJP’s Chief Ministerial candidate, Harsh Vardhan, saw barely over 10,000 tweets in the past day and did not make it to the trends column. Congress, on the other hand, saw moderate support from Twitter users, with #Vote4Sheila (12,631 tweets) trending over the past couple of days.
There should be a rule: Delhi folk who don't vote shouldn't be allowed to come to #Goa for #Sunburn. #QuickestWayToGetTheYouthToVote

The day started off with a bang, with #DelhiVote trending on Twitter in the morning. Twitter users from all over India used the hashtag to try and inspire Delhi-based Twitter users to go out and make their vote count. #NOTA too trended throughout the day, informing potential voters that for the first time ever, the “None of the Above” (NOTA) option was now listed on the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM).

On Facebook too, hashtags like #AamAadmiParty, #Vote4Jhaadu – a broom or jhaadu is the election symbol of the new party – and #Vote4Change have been used over the past week. The trend is likely to continue through the week and after the results of the elections are declared on December 8.
