Indians spend 22 percent of their income to buy iPhone 5s; highest in the world

If you have bought an iPhone 5s in India, then you’ve probably paid more than any other iPhone 5s owner across the world. Based on the per capita purchasing power in India, the iPhone 5s has been priced on an extremely higher-end, reveals the new study by MobileUnlocked. The study reveals that Indians spend 22.3 percent of the per capita gross domestic product (GDP) to own the iPhone 5s. Using purchasing power parity you can understand what percentage of your income you will spend to buy an iPhone 5s. This means an average Indian will spend 22.3 percent of their disposable income if they purchase the 5s.

The study includes 47 countries, and prices listed are through official channels and not grey market. It includes only the 16GB base model for the iPhone 5s that is priced at Rs 53,500 in India. In spite of the high price, there is high demand for the iPhone 5s in India over the 'cheaper' iPhone 5c. The device went out of stock within hours of the new iPhone launch that took place earlier last month.

It should be noted that emerging market China takes the fifth spot. On buying an iPhone 5s, Chinese buyers will be spending less than 10 percent of their income. On the other hand, citizens of Qatar are spending the least for iPhone 5s by paying only 0.76 percent of their disposable income. In US, buyers are paying only 1.36 percent of their disposal income to buy the latest iPhone.
