Three starts UK 4G rollout, ends US roaming charges

Mobile network Three revealed two early Christmas presents for its customers this week, confirming it had begun to roll out its super-fast 4G network and axing roaming charges in a selection of countries including the USA.

The 4G rollout began on the 2nd of December, with Three upgrading customers with a 4G-ready device automatically so they can access the latest high-speed data services when they are in an area with 4G coverage. Unlike rival networks EE and Vodafone, there's no need for customers to take out a new contract in order to benefit from the faster speeds.

The LTE rollout is set to accelerate in January, with all customers with a compatible device able to access 4G at no extra cost by the end of the first quarter of next year when they are in an area with 4G coverage. Three said it aims to cover 50 cities with 4G by the end of 2014 and 98% of the population by the end of 2015.

Three also confirmed it was extending its Feel At Home programme to the USA, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Macau. Feel At Home allows customers to use their UK bundle allowances for data, send texts, call home and receive calls from home when abroad in the qualifying countries. It now operates in 11 destinations around the world where Three's parent company, Hutchinson Telecom operates.

Three chief executive Dave Dyson said that the company plans to add more countries to the programme "soon".
