The trend of wireless speakers has caught up much sooner than the pundits expected. Up until a couple of years ago, consumers were highly apprehensive about the feasibility of this hassle-free form of music consumption particularly for its lack of compatibility with all the different means of playback (phones, tablets, computers) and also for the lack of utility when it comes to convenience. But as it turns out both the consumers and manufacturers have realised the true potential of this technology that essentially frees you from the clutter of wires. As the industry matured, manufacturers have realised that the best way to go about it would be to provide the consumers with wireless speaker options that are wireless in the true sense – something that they can carry wherever they want – something small and compact that can be used or paired with the smartphone that they carry in their pocket. As a result, practically in a wink, you now have a number of wireless (read Bluetooth) speaker options that can not only playback all the music on your phone, help you take you calls wirelessly and also wake you up in the morning.
Yet another up close view of the Transit
Soen Audio from the USA too has seen the potential that this technology has and at the same time they also know how well the Indian market reacts to something that is good in terms of quality and comes with substantial utility options. Their arrival in India marks an acknowledgement for the same. And one of the first products that they have launched here is the Transit – claiming a powerful wireless speaker solution for those who like their music to be with them wherever they go.
The Transit is a sleek single unit where you can easily figure out that the manufacturer has laid a lot of emphasis on build quality and aesthetics with no compromise. The unit is CNC machined using aircraft grade aluminium. And the best part is that though you can feel the weight of the speaker you will not have to bear it - As the speaker comes with a neat looking stand which helps the speaker rest comfortably and also with just the perfect angle so as to optimise the audio performance for the listener. And the form factor literally has got portability written all over it. In terms of connectivity the Transit is as powerful as it can get. And we are not exaggerating here, as just one look at the list of devices that it can connect to and you will immediately agree to us. The speaker is compatible to everything right from Apple devices (via Airplay) to Android, Blackberry and Windows devices and also other computer equipped with Bluetooth Wireless Stereo (via Bluetooth). You can also connect it to mp3 or mp4 players using the standard 3.5 mm jack. So there is hardly any portable device they have left out – in fact we see none.
These are all the parts that go into a Transit speaker
So while the connections are sorted, the bigger problem according to us is that of audio. Small and speakers as compact as the Transit, have a peculiar issue with the lower end and Soen Audio has addressed this problem using their proprietary Momentum Port technology that utilizes advanced fluid dynamic equations to balance the air pressure inside the port – in turn enabling maximum reduction in air velocity, thereby providing the cleanest and deepest possible bass response. As for the rest of the drivers are concerned, they have SOEN transducers that are built with the exacting precision of a fine Swiss watch and are the most advanced miniature transducers ever created. These leading edge transducers claim to produce an unparalleled full spectrum sound from a surprisingly compact size. As far as battery life is concerned, the Transit comes with an onboard Li-Ion battery which is to be charged using a regular mini USB cable and also promises to last for a good eight hours.
Have a look at the video explainig all details here.
Currently we just have the international pricing of the product and that is $199.95 (Rs 12,500 approximately). The pricing looks reasonable for now, hopefully the Indian price, when announced, will not make it exhorbitant. We will hold back our verdict on the VFM factor until then for this really powerful and efficient product.
