In an interview with YouTube reviewer and personality Marques Brownlee, Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside revealed among other things that the company is working on a upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat for the Moto G. This update will come sometime in January, according to the Motorola boss. Now, the Moto G is expected to enter the Indian market in January as well, so it could come with Android 4.4 KitKat, right out of the box, making it the second such phone after the Nexus 5. It’s less than a month that Google launched the Moto G and the device has already gathered loads of accolades for its performance, build and price. Priced at $179 which amounts to approximately Rs 10,900 for an 8GB off-contract unit, the Moto G puts every other budget Android smartphone to shame.

Woodside said that the device came out of a specific challenge: "How do we create a phone that's objectively as good as iPhone 5 for a third of the cost?" Looks like, the company has well passed that challenge. Many reviews of the phone say Motorola is gearing up to “disrupt” the smartphone market by making a phone that is feature packed, behaves like a premium phone, at a price point that is around one-third what premium smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 5s cost. Motorola is also working at bringing smartwatches to the market.
We also learned last week that Motorola is taking a thin-margin approach to the Moto G, which costs Google $123 in terms of component and assembly costs. This means Motorola has an operating profit margin of about 5 per cent for each Moto G sold. So the company is not afraid of making sacrifices to get its phone to more corners.
Here’s a quick look at the specifications of the Motorola Moto G:
- 4.5-inch HD “edge-to-edge” display, 720x1280 pixels, 329ppi
- Bluetooth, Wi-Fi
- 8GB, 16GB internal memory variants
- 5-megapixel rear camera, LED flash; 1.3-megapixel front camera
The company has also announced some accessories, including Shells, Flip Shells, Grip Shells and some music accessories like JBL wireless speakers for the device.
