Microsoft opens Project Spark beta for Windows 8.1 users

Microsoft has officially opened the beta program for Project Spark, a platform which allows amateurs to make their own games for Windows, Xbox 360 and Xbox One with no coding experience.

Meant for anyone with an interest in game design but who lacks the expertise or experience to be part of ID@Xbox indie development program , Project Spark is part game designer and part game. Using the software, players can create a world in a variety of different game formats. Action role-playing games, third-person shooters, plat formers and tower defense genres have all been confirmed, which are then procedurally generated. This world can then be customize and tweaked, or used as-is.

Characters in the game can be tweaked, too. The Kinect depth-sensing camera system can be used to capture motion data and create customized animations while recording audio for voice-over use both in-game and during animated cut scenes. Unlike true game development, Project Spark requires no programming knowledge and is designed for anyone to pick up and play.

The beta, which has opened to strictly limited numbers of applicants, requires a PC running Windows 8.1 - although Microsoft has promised a similar beta of a native Xbox One version of Project Spark, which will allow for games to be created directly on the console, will be launching in January next year. Games created can then be played on Windows machines, Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles.

Those interested in creating a game in Project Spark can sign up for the beta program directly on the official website.
