Is a high-end Samsung Windows Phone 8 device coming in 2014?

Amidst the leaks about the alleged Galaxy S5, yet another Samsung smartphone has started popping its head. This time around, though, there's a surprise; it runs Windows Phone 8, and not Android. Indian site Zauba.com listed the unnamed Samsung phone, reports Sammobile. However, it does show a model number that reads SM-W750, with the W hinting at a Windows Phone device. Samsung's Android range expectedly has a varied naming scheme, but W doesn't figure anywhere on that list. The site also reveals details like a 5-inch display and a price of Rs 33,245. However, there's no way to ascertain if that is the actual MSRP of the phone. It does indicate a high-end device. The site reportedly says that the phones were sent for testing, evaluation and R&D purposes. It doesn’t mention any other specifications.

Samsung's back in the Windows Phone scheme of things?

While Samsung is known for its Android smartphones and tablets, it had also built a few Windows-based devices this year - Ativ S, Ativ Q and Ativ Tab 3. The last Samsung Windows Phone 8 smartphone was the Ativ S Neo, which was released in August this year. Besides Windows Phone and Android, Samsung is also invested in development of another OS dubbed Tizen, which is yet to see market release.

While it may seem odd that Samsung would go after the high-end market in the Windows Phone segment, it makes a whole lot of sense. Unlike the Android high-end market, which has very little headroom for revenue growth, there's only Nokia in that segment in the Windows Phone market. If Samsung manages to deliver a great high-end WP8 device, it could end up increasing revenue while also bringing a bit of competition to the Windows Phone segment. And that's always a good thing.
