Microsoft has finally confirmed that its Games with Gold promotion, which provides free downloadable games for paying Xbox Live Gold members, will extend to the next-generation Xbox One.
Introduced in the lead-up to the Xbox One's launch, Games with Gold gives those who have a paid subscription to Microsoft's Xbox Live service, without which you cannot play Xbox 360 games online, free downloadable games. Originally a time-limited promotion, the company has confirmed it plans to extend the offer to the Xbox One console some time early next year.
Details have yet to be confirmed, but Microsoft's Larry Hryb confirmed the plan via Twitter. "Great news," he wrote, "access to free games each month is coming for Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox One - details coming later in 2014".
The move brings Microsoft on par with rival Sony, which offers a paid-for PlayStation Network subscription dubbed PS+ with a monthly roster of free downloadable games. Multiplayer gaming on the PS3 is free for all, but the company has also confirmed that a paid-for PSN+ subscription will be required for online multiplayer on the PS4 - meaning Xbox Live Gold and PSN+ are now virtually indistinguishable from one another.
The Xbox One is due to launch in the UK on the 22nd of November.
