Sony confirms PS4 hardware failures, claims majority are fine

Sony has confirmed that some PS4 consoles have been reported as failing or even arriving completely dead following its US launch last night.

Early adopters have reported issues ranging from crashes or a failure to output video to being completely unusable out of the box.

Even some review units, sent by Sony specifically to media outlets in the US, have been found to be faulty. Gaming site Kotaku was one of those affected, having to swap out its original PS4 for a replacement owing to no video appearing on the display. The site also found others who had bought retail, boxed consoles and found similar problems with consoles refusing to switch on, output video, or boot correctly.

Sony has confirmed that these problems exist, but says they represent a tiny fraction of the number of PS4 consoles sold so far. "We are investigating reported PS4 issues," Sony's Shuhei Yoshida posted to Twitter last night. "The number is very small compared to shipped, we believe they are isolated incidents".

Sony's official stance is that only around 0.4 per cent of shipped PS4s are affected by the hardware issues. A design flaw that can cause the console to wobble when placed on a flat surface covers all units but is generally considered to be a minor problem noticeable only if you deliberately press down on one side of the console. Those with faulty units are asked to contact their retailers for a replacement.

With the US enjoying a two-week head-start with the PS4, gamers in the UK will be hoping Sony can filter out the faulty units and address the issues ahead of the European launch on the 29th of November.
