We're only hours away from the launch of the Xbox One, but Microsoft has been forced to admit that Dolby Digital surround sound support won't be present for anyone picking up their console this weekend - if they intend to use digital optical audio.
The issue won't affect anyone that uses HDMI for sending console audio to their TV or AV receiver, but anyone using digital optical audio cables will be stuck in stereo rather than 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound.
Posting to NeoGaf, Microsoft's dirctor of product planning Albert Penello said "Dolby Digital is coming post launch. This was a SW (software) scheduling issue pure and simple, and I know people are disappointed, but we will have it.
"Anyone with an HDMI receiver should be fine, as we pass the uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1 through HDMI as well as DTS."
Thankfully this is an issue that can be resolved with a console firmware update, but Microsoft has yet to pencil in a date for when gamers can expect one.
