PlayStation Vita gets new firmware update bringing PS4 Remote Play

Sony has released a new firmware update for the PlayStation Vita, and what’s special about this update is that it is essentially getting the handheld gaming device ready for the imminent launch of the PlayStation 4. The update to the device adds a new app called PS4 Link, which lets it connect to the PlayStation 4 for features like Remote Play and the second-screen capabilities featured in upcoming games. The update is numbered at version 3.00.The update has also added a few new features to the handheld, such as improved Parental Controls, which lets users manage the duration of gameplay and the use of games and videos. Users can also control access to certain areas of the Vita, such as the use of the Internet browser and Location Data. The Photos app has also been updated with a new panorama mode, letting users take panorama photos.

The Friends app has been improved with a new layout, and it now sports four tabs: Find Player on PSN, Friends, Friend Requests and Players Blocked. The Party app has a new icon and it now allows voice and text chat between Vita and PS4 users. The Group Messaging app has been changed to Messages, and now sports an improved layout. It also supports chat between PS4 gamers as well as those using mobile devices with the PlayStation App.Out of all of these changes, the addition of PS4 Link seems to be the biggest one. Remote Play will essentially let users play their PS4 games on the Vita. This not only lets gamers play anywhere in their house, but it also frees up the TV for other uses. Sony recommends connecting the PS4 to the Internet through Ethernet, and keeping the Vita close to the Wi-Fi access point for optimal performance.
