While MediaTek is well known for being ever-present in Indian smartphones, it also seems to have caught the attention of Tier 1 smartphone players as well. LG’s G Pro Lite is one of those phones from top-dog manufactures to hit our markets. As the name suggests, the G Pro Lite is designed to offer some of the key features of the G Pro but at an affordable price. By key features, we mean the large screen and long battery life. Priced at roughly Rs 20,000, the G Pro Lite competes with the Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos and the Sony Xperia C in terms of features and specifications. We’ve been using the phone a couple of days now and here’s a quick video giving you a walkthrough of the handset and a couple positive and negative things we’ve found so far. The G Pro Lite sports a large 5.5-inch display with qHD resolution. Under the hood, it is powered by a 1GHz dual-core MediaTek MT6577 processor coupled with 1GB RAM. While the UI is smooth for the most part, the chipset isn’t powerful enough when it comes to multi-tasking; app loading times are quite long and there’s a noticeable lag which creeps in intermittently. The low resolution display isn’t great for reading fine text and there’s lots of pixelation around icons too.

All this is powered by a 3,140 mAh battery, which does a good job of delivering an all-day battery life. LG has also included some of its key software features such as KnockON, Pause and Resume recording, and QTranslator. Measuring 150.2 x 76.9 x 9.4mm, the G Pro Lite weighs in at 161 grams. LG has also included a stylus that can be handy to use on G Pro Lite's large display. The device comes in two colour options – black and white.

Here’s a quick look at its specifications:

  • 5.5-inch IPS display with 960 x 540 pixels of resolution

  • Dual SIM, 3G, Wi-Fi

  • GPS with A-GPS

  • Bluetooth v3.0

  • 8 megapixel BSI rear camera, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera

  • 8GB onboard storage, expandable via microSD card slot

We feel LG has cut too many corners with the G Pro Lite and while it’s nice to see features like an IR port and built-in stylus, we don’t understand why they skimped on critical features like an ambient light sensor or a notification LED. Even GLONASS is missing, which is now a standard part of most new smartphones. We’ll be bringing you to full review of the G Pro Lite soon, so hang tight.
