MediaTek chipset-powered 4G smartphones coming to India in 2014

MediaTek chipset-powered 4G smartphones coming to India in 2014

India will be seeing a host of 4G-enabled smartphones packed with MediaTek chipsets headed its way in 2014. MediaTek, in an interaction with Light Reading India, has said that it is gearing up to release its 4G chipset processors that will help India’s 4G handset ecosystem “grow at a rapid pace.” So far, there have been reports of local manufacturers like Xolo working on a 4G LTE-enabled smartphone. The country’s second largest manufacturer, Micromax, plans to launch 4G-enabled devices by the end of the year. Karbonn might also be testing 4G-enabled devices for the coming year. Telecom service providers aren’t far behind. Currently, Bharti Airtel offers 4G services in India, and is currently offering it at 3G rates. Rival provider Aircel was recently reported conducting trials in Andhra Pradesh. Reliance Jio also recently bagged the rights to offer 4G services in that region.

Finbarr Moynihan, General Manager, International Sales and Marketing at MediaTek, said “We are working with various handset manufacturers in the country and you will see our partners launching quality 4G devices at competitive prices in 2014. We expect that the next year will be critical for us. India is an exciting 4G market.” The executive, while talking about MediaTek’s plans for India, has said that it will be collaborating with local players like Intex, Micromax, Spice and Lava. Moynihan further believes that the demand for smart devices in the economy is so varied that one chipset or price point cannot address consumers' needs. Apart from 4G-enabled chipsets, MediaTek also plans to introduce its “true” octa-core mobile system-on-chip for mobile phones and tablets in the country. Titled MT6592, the new chipset can run all eight of its cores at the same time, unlike other SoCs like Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa, which run its eight cores on ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture, ensuring that only four cores are active at any given point in time. The first Indian manufacturer to bring this to India is Intex, through a new phablet tentatively called the i17, which will be priced under Rs 20,000. MediaTek has said that more companies will be jumping on the MT6592 bandwagon in the next couple of weeks. In addition to traditional forms of technology, MediaTek has said that it is working on wearables as well and says that there will soon be some “revolutionary products in that segment.” Further details about these prospective products were not revealed. While breaking down the current sales figures, Moynihan said that the company was currently the third-largest global chipset manufacturer, with around 110 million MediaTek chipset-based smart devices shipped by its partners in 2012. The executive expected the company to close this year with around 200 million device shipments.
