Apple’s not-so-budget iPhone, the 5c, may see even more production cuts in the near future. A new report from Digitimes claims that Hon Hai, better known by its trading name, Foxconn, may be looking to stop production of the 5c at its factory in Zhengzhou, China. The supplier, according to the report, will instead be shifting the facility’s manufacturing efforts to focus on the more popular iPhone 5s. According to the source, Foxconn and Pegatron have been receiving “OEM orders for 30% and 70%, respectively, of iPhone 5c production.” DigiTimes, however, does note that a separate report from China-based C technology claims that Foxconn won’t actually stop production of the iPhone 5c, but rather, “reduce weekly output slightly.” There is no official word from Apple or Foxconn about any of this, making it hard to validate these claims.
More production cuts lined up for the 5c
News of Apple cutting down on iPhone 5c production is not new. According to an unverified translation, a Chinese website had earlier claimed that Apple was continuing to reduce orders for the iPhone 5c with suppliers in order to balance out production with customer demand for the 5s. The report goes on to say that assembly partner Pegatron had slashed production from 320,000 units per day in October to just 80,000 units per day, whereas Foxconn was working at a minimal capacity of 8,000 or 9,000 units per day. Major cuts in the production of the 5c at the two major suppliers were first reported last month. At the time, Apple was said to be mulling over cutting orders of the 5c for the final three months of this year. Pegatron, at the time, was instructed to reduce production by nearly 20 percent. Foxconn, on the other hand, was ordered to reduce production by one-third for the same period. Since the official launch of the new iPhones, the 5c has been seen much greater availability when compared to the 5s. While the former can be picked up on the spot from any Apple retailer, the latter comes with a clear waiting period. When the new iPhone models were launched in India, reported indicated that the 5s sold out within days, with retailers asking Apple for emergency replenishments. While the 5c will cost you Rs 41,900 for the 16GB model, the higher-end 5s starts at Rs 53,500.
