Barely a few weeks after it was launched on the Google Play Store for Android devices, the CyanogenMod installer has been pulled off it. The app was reportedly in violation of Google Play’s developer terms. In a blog post announcing this latest development, the company wrote that it was contacted by the Google Play Support team to let them know that the app was violating the developer terms. The team advised the company to voluntarily remove the app from the store or Google would be forced to do so administratively.
Pulled off Google Play
The Google Play Support team admitted that although the app itself was harmless, it was in a bit of a grey area. This was because it “encouraged users to void their warranty”. This is why the app was not going to be permitted to stay on the store, the team said. For those not in the know, the CyanogenMod installer helped users install custom ROMs on their devices. While users had to earlier navigate through nearly 20 steps to do so, with the installer and the PC client, they could install custom ROMs in barely a few steps. However, the app that made its debut only earlier this month on the Play Store was not to remain on it for too long. “We’ve seen hundreds of thousands of installations of the application, proving the demand for more choice, and that the need for an alternative Android experience exists,” the company wrote in the blog post. “As we work through this new hurdle, we will continue to make available and support the installation process via our own hosting services.”Since Android is open enough to let devices sideload applications via unknown sources, you can still go ahead and use CyanogenMod to get custom ROMs for your phones. The company has claimed that besides allowing sideloading, it has also submitted the application to Samsung and Amazon’s app-stores.
