Apple releases firmware fixes for MacBook Pro Retina (2013) keyboard issues

Apple has released a firmware update for its latest MacBook Pro Retina laptops, which resolves issues with the keyboard and touchpad becoming unresponsive and speeds up poorly-performing graphics hardware.

The 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina Display are an undeniable upgrade on their predecessors, but the software has proven to be a little buggy. Launching with OS X 10.9 Mavericks, the latest version of Apple's operating system, the devices showed some awkward glitches that have been plaguing early adopters.

Those who had purchased the 13in model found that the laptop's keyboard and multi-touch trackpad became unresponsive during use, preventing them from using the laptop without a complete reboot. The 15in model, meanwhile, saw a bug in models with optional Nvidia GeForce graphics hardware which would result in the 3D performance being severely limited when the system woke from sleep mode, again requiring a reboot to resolve.

An update to the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) portion of the laptops has now resolved both issues. Owners of either new MacBook model are advised to open the App Store and check for updates in order to install the fix. A separate fix for all machines running OS X Mavericks, which solves connectivity issues using the bundled Mail application with Google's Gmail service, is also available.
