Upcoming Google Hangouts update said to bring SMS integration

Many Google users were disappointed that Hangouts did not come with SMS and MMS integration for Android. And while there is still no official information, Google may just be pleasing those users. Android Police has come up some compelling evidence that the features may be seen in the upcoming Hangouts 1.3.

The possibility of this integration last came up in May, but at the time, Google had clearly stated that it “has nothing to announce at this time”. Users are currently making use of version 1.2.018 of Hangouts that allows for instant messaging and video calling. There is still no mention of voice calling and messaging yet, and Google has a seperate service for the same called Voice. Sources close to the matter, also passed on some images of the new Hangouts verspm. Users will see a “via SMS" remark next to text messages. MMS support is also said to be a part of the upcoming version. There is also a settings menu for wireless alerts as well a toggle for auto-retrieving messages while roaming. Users who aren’t too keen on the features have the option of opting out of SMS via Hangouts.

The information also came with a mockup of what Hangouts could look like (Image credit: Android Central)

While videos being sent via MMS was spoken about, the source clearly stated that there was no news to confirm that particular rumour at the time. All told though, the news seems promising, because the move will definitely round up Hangouts as the one-stop shop for all things messaging on Android. The source clearly states that there is no information about a possible ETA. There is no confirmation either about whether the new Hangouts will be released with Android 4.4 Kitkat or if it will be a separate release.
