Twitter rolls out new welcome page, puts focus on conversations and mobile

With Twitter’s IPO lined up, the micro-blogging site has decided to put its money where its mouth is. The service quietly released a brand new welcome page for the website that shows off Twitter’s mobile product. Earlier, the welcome page for Twitter was minimalistic at its best, talking about what the service has to offer. “Welcome to Twitter,” it read, “Find out what’s happening, right now, with the people and organizations you care about.” The revamped welcome page gets straight down to business, urging users to start conversation, explore interests and “be in the know”.

The page also prominently displays Twitter’s mobile products with links directing users to the download page of the apps on Android and iOS platforms. There’s also a link to show other devices you can download Twitter for. Mobile has turned out to be one of Twitter’s new point of focus with the IPO looming and it is only obvious Twitter would choose to shove it into the spotlight. According to the company’s filings, 65 percent of its ad sales were driven by the mobile platform. There’s a fine change in language on the home page that also showcases Twitter’s latest new way of encouraging conversations – the dreaded blue line. Twitter introduced a new way to keep track of conversations in August. There’s a blue line that threads conversational tweets together which help you keep a track of conversations. Of course, since this feature is pretty new, it turned out to be a little problematic with annoying aspects like chronological order of conversations being reversed and conversations resurfacing every few minutes, especially if the topic is hot. Needless to say, this has not gone down very well with regular Twitter users but the way the social networking website has been showing off this feature makes us feel like it’s here to stay.
