Sony has just hit the jackpot with three new camera launches yesterday. The company has announced the Sony Alpha 7 and 7R, full-frame mirrorless ILC cameras as well as the Cyber-shot RX10 camera. First up, Sony’s Alpha 7 and 7R are supposed to be the world’s smallest full-frame interchangeable lens models. The 7R sports a 36.4 effective megapixel 35mm Exmor CMOS sensor, the highest any camera in Sony’s Alpha line has, with no optical low pass filter for added resolving power and increased image detail. The Alpha 7, on the other hand, boasts of a 24.3 effective megapixel 35mm Exmor CMOS sensor and a Hybrid AF system.

Each of the cameras are equipped with advanced imaging features like an all new BIONZ X processor, fast AF capabilities, a clear XGA OLED Tru-finder, full HD 60p recording, Wi-Fi and NFC connection, dust and moisture resistance and more. The cameras can access Sony’s platform of PlayMemories Camera Apps too. The platform includes the Multiple Exposure app that automatically combines sequential exposures into one shot, a Smart Remote Control feature that lets you use your smartphone as a remote control and more. Sony has also added the Cyber-Shot RX10 camera to the RX series. It features a 1.0-inch 20.2 MP BSI CMOS sensor – the same as the RX100 II compact camera – combined with 24-200mm (35mm equivalent) F2.8 Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T zoom lens. The camera’s high-resolution sensor and zoom lens is complemented by a BIONZ X processing engine and AF system. The BIONZ X processor in the RX10 is supposed to be three times faster than the previous BIONZ processors. The fixed Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar 24-200mm lens has a wide F2.8 maximum aperture across the entire zoom range and when combined with a seven-bladed iris diaphragm allows for professional-looking photos. The camera seems to be aimed at video shooters too as the RX10 is capable of shooting 1080p videos at 60 or 24fps with manual control.
The more expensive Sony Alpha 7R
The camera also has built-in Wi-Fi and NFC compatibility. Just like the Alpha 7 and 7R, the RX10 can let you shoot images using your smartphone as a remote. The camera also features a high-contrast OLED Tru-Finder that provides edge-to-edge visibility and a wide viewing angle of about 33-degrees as well as a 3.0-type White Magic LCD. That’s not all, Sony announced 5 new full-frame E-mount lenses that can take full advantage of the Alpha 7 and the Alpha 7R cameras, including mid-range zoom lenses from Sony and Carl Zeiss, two Zeiss Sonnar T prime lenses and a premium-quality G LensTM telephoto zoom. Sony's E-mount interchangeable lens lineup now consists of 21 different lenses including the new full-frame models. There are also two new-generation mount adaptors to utilise Sony-A mount optics on the Alpha 7 and Alpha 7R cameras. The LA-EA3 adapter adds compatibility for existing A-mount lenses the new cameras, while the LA-EA4 model adds the ultra-fast focusing and shooting capabilities of Sony's Translucent Mirror Technology. There is also a new vertical grip (VG-C1EM) that offers greater comfort during vertical shooting and can accommodate two separate NP-FW50 batteries for extended battery life and shooting time. A new BC-TRW compact external battery charger, and FA-CS1M off camera shoe allows the use of external flashes (HVL-43M, 20M) in off-camera wired applications. There are new LCS-ELCA soft leather carry cases too.
The Sony Cyber-shot RX10
The Sony Alpha 7R camera will be priced at $2,300 (Rs 142,025 approx.) for body only and the Alpha 7 camera with a 28-70mm F3.5 – F5.6 full- frame lens (model SEL2870) for about $2.000 (Rs 123,500 approx.) The Alpha 7 body-only price is about $1700 (Rs 104,975 approx.). Both the cameras will be available for purchase this December in the US. The Cyber-shot RX10, on the other hand, will set you back $1,300 (Rs 80,275 approx) and will be available this November in the US. There is no word on international availability yet.
