Windows 8 certainly wasn't perfect but we quickly got on with it once we'd sidelined the full-screen apps. Now though there's Microsoft Windows 8.1, it brings the Start button back, though only as a sop really as the fullscreen Start menu is still in place. More importantly, numerous other irritations have been ironed out and the apps are much improved.

The Ricoh Theta is a genuinely groundbreaking device. This slim stick contains two fish-eye lenses that fire in tandem to create a 360-degree panorama in an instant. You can then scroll around the image on your smartphone and share them online. It's far more than a novelty and we'd be surprised if it didn't take off.

Streaming media content to your TV has gone from being a techy niche to a mainstream smash. If your TV is lagging behind then grab a Roku 3 to bring it up-to-date. The range of online services is good, though 4OD and LoveFilm are missing. Its interface is excellent and we love its headphone output on the remote.

The Pentax K-50 takes on the big guns at Canon and Nikon and comes out as a genuine alternative. You simply don't get dual-control dials and weather-sealing for £600 from either of its competitors. It also has a fantastic viewfinder and takes great-looking shots. It's not as well suited to video, but for photogrphy purists it's worthy of serious consideration.

It's time for the annual Expert Reviews awards, and we need your help to pick the winners. Simply complete our short survey and we'll put you in a draw to win an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite - the ultimate eReader, and worth £109. The survey closes on the 31st October, so don't delay!

The Beko WMB91242LC is cheap to buy at £296 and, thanks to the Eco mode, cheap to run, with decent wash performance in all of its cycles. It wins our Budget Buy award.

The Toshiba C50-A-156 costs just £350 but you get so much more than you would with any comparably priced tablet. A powerful Core-i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, a DVD writer, plus a good keyboard and display. If you need to get stuff done quickly a laptop like this is still a great tool.
