Nokia drops price of Lumia 1020 in China by a third

Nokia has been focusing a great deal on bumping up the cameras seen on its handsets, a recent example being the Lumia 1520 and the Lumia 1020. The latter however, might not be doing too well, owing to the high price tag that the device was offically launched with across markets. One market in particular where the device may be failing to strike a cord with for this reason is China. It now looks like the Finnish smartphone manufacturer has dropped the price of the handset significantly.

According to a report by UnwiredView, the device, when it was launched in that market, was priced at 5999 Yuan in August. Now, the Lumia 1020 can now be picked up for 3999 Yuan during a short term promotion at Jingdong Mall, which is one of the largest Chinese e-commerce retailers. The difference amounts to a 33 percent drop in the price in just two months.

The Lumia 1020 sees a price drop in China

China is not the only market where the Finnish company has reduced the price of the smartphone, according to the source report. When launched, the device was being sold for $299 with a 2 year contract in the US, while an unsubsidised version of the device was priced at 700 Euros in Europe. Nokia has now been changing the pricing model of the device. The price of the AT&T version of the Lumia 1020 has been dropped from $299 to $199 a week ago. The device can now be picked up from Amazon for $99. UK carriers are also now offering the phone for free if users are willing to sign a two-year contract with at least a £37 monthly tariff. The unlocked and SIM-free retail price in Europe is still relatively high, though, a bit over 600 Euros. The Lumia 1020 is currently available in India for Rs 49,999. While the price of the new handset may seem astronomical for now, the current price drops in other countries suggests that there is a good chance that Nokia may officially drop the price in a month or two.
