Following the removal of its Wii U console from Asda stores, Nintendo has launched its own online shop offering consoles, games, and collectables direct to the consumer.
The Wii U launched late last year, but has not been a commercial success for the company. Its predecessor became the must-have toy of the year thanks to its innovative motion-based control system, but the higher price of the Wii U coupled with confusion as to how it relates to the original Wii led to poor sales. Poor enough, in fact, that Asda removed it from shelves after a £100 price-cut failed to shift stock.
Now, Nintendo has launched its own web-based shop, selling the console, along with the company's other devices, direct to the consumer, handily bypassing retailers like Asda. Initial stock in the shop includes the company's full range of games, the 3DS family of hand-held consoles including the new 2DS, the Wii U and the Wii Mini. Free delivery is included, along with an extended one-year warranty on consoles.
The Nintendo Store also includes some exclusive products not found in shops, including a limited-edition Pokémon-themed Nintendo 3DS XL console, with promises of more exclusive items to come in the near future.
The Nintendo Store UK site is live now, with 2-3 day delivery promised on all stock.
