iPhone Reduce and Reuse trade-in programme coming to UK Apple Stores

Apple apparently planning to bring its iPhone Reuse and Recycle trade-in programme to Europe, including the UK, before the end of the year.

Launched in the US in August, just ahead of the company's iPhone 5S smartphone, the Reuse and Recycle programme allows a customer who is buying a new iPhone model to trade in their existing handset for a discount on the new model. Like third-party mobile recycling services, the cash on offer depends on the age and condition of the handset.

If the buyer agrees to the offer, the phone's contents are backed up and can be automatically installed onto the new handset, along with the old phone's SIM card.

According to anonymous sources speaking to 9to5Mac, the previous US-exclusive programme will be heading to the UK within the coming months, as Apple Store staff have begun receiving training on how to value, back-up and trade-in customers' existing iPhones.

Those interested in making use of the service may find themselves paying for convenience, however. Analysis of the prices offered for iPhones in the US suggests that Apple's valuations are typically lower than those of third-party recycling services or direct sale on the second-hand market.

Apple has not commented on when the service will go live in the UK, but those interested in a hopefully hassle-free way to upgrade to the latest iPhone would do well to wait and see what the coming months bring.
