New smartphone app tells you when satellites are watching

Ever wondering if you were being spied on by imaging spacecraft way out in the troposphere? A new smartphone app has now been developed in the US that could possibly tell you exactly when you’re being watched and which spacecraft is doing the watching. The app, called SpyMeSat, gives the user notifications when spy satellites and unclassified imaging satellites are zipping over your head and may be taking your picture. The app, developed by Orbit Logic, while sounding a bit paranoid, may just find takers given the amount of covert surveillance we’ve been hearing about. The app is only available for iOS for Rs 110, though, and there has been no word from the developer about support for other platforms.According to space.com, all the imaging satellites tracked by the new app are in the low-Earth orbit at an altitude of about 805 kilometers. The app itself shows a dynamic map that displays orbit tracks and the location of remote sensing satellites with upcoming passes over a user’s specified location.

Alex Herz, president of the developer firm behind the app, said, “I actually got the idea for the app from talking to friends outside the aerospace industry who were always very interested in space and satellites and imaging from space. This app answers those questions in a fun and interactive way."The app only makes use of available public information about commercial and international imaging satellites. It also uses available orbit data from the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), a website designed to provide current orbital software, educational materials and links to software to support tracking satellites and understanding orbital mechanics. No classified imaging satellites, from any nation, have their orbit information published, so the app cannot show these satellites.
