NationalChip introduces new set-top-box chips for India

TV viewing has past the simpler times of Doordarshan and a handful of cable channels. With over 200 channels available India is a market like no other. NationalChip from China was quick to realize that and established base in India to tap the Indian satellite TV market. NationalChip was officially authorized by many CAS companies for their chips with solutions.

NationalChip has now launched new set top box chips for the Indian market. The new HD STB based on GX323201 is aimed to deliver better HD content, on being asked how HD content will be better from the existing standards Patrick Dou NationalChip VP replied…

The new chip can deliver over 1000MIPS (million instruction per second) CPU performance which completely complements the fullHD (1080p) playback capability of the chip. The chip is capable of upscaling the 1080i HD transmission that we get to a fullHD signal, thus resulting in better quality picture. The new chip also enables the set-top boxes to cater to OTT (over the top) services like Youtube or Hungama with the incorporation of onboard Wi-fi. This really sets the standards very high when it comes to any set- top-box that are available in the Indian market. The low end SD set top box based on GX3001R or GX3012Q are most cost effective because of the high speed that offers a better user experience with enhanced picture quality.

We asked about the possibilities of 4K being introduced in STBs and Mr. Patrick Dou answered affirmatively but also mentioned that it will take a very long time - A minimum of two years for the concept to get a headstart on a mass level. According to Mr. Dou, the transition from FullHD to 4K will be much difficult and cumbersome as compared to the transition between SD to FullHD. Some of the major obstacles being content production and also playback of the content. But the good part being the fact that manufacturers are taking concrete steps in this direction.

Further we also asked them about the possibilities of 3D transmission through set-top boxes. In response, Mr. Patrick Dou was quiet negative about the concept considering a number of variables that are involved in 3D video in all terms, be it production or consumption. The only ray of hope that he sees is that in sports content broadcasting.

NationalChip is first Chinese company to develop digital TV IC solutions since 2001 and the first China based company to achieve big deployment to support digitalization phases in India. On being asked about India missing the digitalization deadlines, Patrick responded “Missing deadlines for digitalization is not a surprise as it is bound to happen everywhere and especially a country like India which is so diverse.”
