At Apple’s event a couple of days ago, company revealed a host of new products for the market. On the list was a revamped MacBook Pro that comes with a bunch of new hardware. While the new version seems similar to its predecessor, the company has promised longer battery life, improved performance, faster Wi-Fi and lower starting prices. While the new 13-inch and 15-inch additions definitely comes with the latest specifications, last year’s models are still a force to be reckoned with, despite the slightly dated features. So which one rises to the top? We decided to put compare old version and the new ones to the test to see if the new MacBook Pro is worth the investment.
New MacBook Pro vs old MacBook Pro: What's the difference
InternalsThe new MacBook Pro has finally seen the company add in Intel’s latest fourth-generation Core i-series chipset, also known as Haswell. This was a necessary move, given that all the competition had already integrated the latest hardware onto their machines. The first Apple machine to get Haswell was the MacBook Air, followed soon after by the iMac. The new chipset, according to the company, will give the 13-inch MacBook Pro a battery life of nine hours. Last year’s 13-inch model claimed to have a battery life of seven hours. Thus, according to the official statement at least, it looks like you will get better battery life from the new models.

In terms of the display, the new model retains the high screen resolution, with the 13-inch model offering 2,560x1600 pixels. No differences noted here when compared with the old one. One of the biggest disappointments is the reduced RAM seen in the entry level 13-inch model. While last year’s MacBook Pro came with 8GB of RAM, this year’s model comes with 4GB, which is definitely a step down. The saving grace for the new device is the new Intel Iris graphics processor that it comes up, a definite step up from the Intel HD Graphics 4000 processor seen in the earlier model. Apple has also moved to PCI-e SSD storage instead of the SATA type seen in previous models of its laptops. The difference here is simple; PCI-e is faster than SATA, allowing for faster transfer rates and stops the connector type from being a bottleneck.DesignWhile the overall form factor remains the same, there are a few differences between the old model and the new one. The new MacBook Pro weighs 1.57kg which is a bit lighter than the older one, which weighs 1.62kg. The new model is also slimmer than the old, measuring 18mm as compared to the 19mm seen in the previous edition. Overall, it looks like the new model is lighter and slimmer than its predecessor, although the difference is not too dramatic. The new MacBook Pro is definitely still not as light as the MacBook Air, though, which weighs 1.35kg, but it is getting closer.
slightly slimmer and lighter
Connectivity: The new model comes with the latest “ac” standard bandwidth of the Wi-Fi standard. This should definitely offer better range and much better transfer rates. The new model also comes packed with the next-generation Thunderbolt ports. Thunderbolt 2 will give the users better data transfer speeds. From what we know so far, the new technology has data transfer speed of 20GB/s while the older model gave users 10GB/s speed. The new ports will also come with support for 4K displays. The socket looks exactly the same as the previous Thunderbolt type, and it is backward-compatible with any old Thunderbolt gear. Price: While a Retina display bearing MacBook Pro is definitely not going to be cheap, the new devices have seen the price drop a bit. The 13-inch model has been given a $200 price drop on the international price and is now available on the Apple India store starts from Rs 99,900. The earlier edition, when it was launched in India, came with a price tag of Rs 1, 14,900. Overall, the 13-inch entry level MacBook Pro with Retina display seems to be a safe upgrade. The latest specs, the increased battery life, battery connectivity options and the slight change to the weight and thickness makes it a good option to look at. The dropped price also makes it an attractive option for someone looking for the latest premium Apple laptop.
