Grand Theft Auto 5 is barely two months old, but it has already bagged its first major trophy - Game of the Year at the 2013 Golden Joystick Awards. Already the fastest-selling video game of all-time, GTA V pipped The Last of Us to the prize.
Naughty Dog's post-apocalyptic stunner still walked away with a brace of awards, winning home Best Newcomer and Best Storytelling.
For the first time in its 31 year history, the Golden Joysticks also honoured an individual - Ken Levine, Bioshock Infinite Creative Director and Co-Founder of Irrational Games, was on hand to pick up the special Lifetime Achievement award.
Activision's mega-franchise Call of Duty was honoured with the Hall of Fame award, the only other award of the afternoon not to be voted for by the gaming public. Elsewhere in the proceedings, Oculus Rift won Innovation of the Year. Twenty-one-year-old technology founder Palmer Luckey personally accepted the accolade.
"As the games industry prepares for the launch of the next generation of consoles in November, all eyes were focused on Most Wanted to gauge what the gaming public were most looking forward to getting their hands on. In the category, which included both Sony's PS4 and Microsoft's Xbox One, it was the upcoming hack-and-slash game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt which reigned supreme," the award's organisers said.
The awards this year received a record-breaking 10 million votes, spurred on by the promise of a free game from event sponsor Green Man Gaming.
