After spending a long time in development and an open beta, indie action roleplaying game Path of Exile has finally been officially launched. The game is free-to-play, and supports itself through microtransactions. However, since its beta days, the game has been lauded for its "correct" use of microtransactions which don't upset the game's balance.Developed by Grinding Gear Games, Path of Exile is a Diablo-styled point-and-kill game which mainly revolves around finding new and more powerful equipment.
Looks like a Diablo clone, plays like something better
While this may simply seem like another Diablo clone, it is worth noting that the game has a unique skill system which is a bit reminiscent of the Sphere Grid system we saw ages ago back in Final Fantasy 10. Passive skills are spread out across a major board where you can pick and choose what you want to level up, with stats such as attack damage and health being boostable. Active skills, such as usable spells, use a Final Fantasy 7-styled Materia system where players can use upgradable magical gems that are socketed in every piece of equipment in the game. The studio behind the game was founded in November 2006, and work on the game itself was started soon after. Now that the game has finally been launched, the developers hope to further support it with new content. The new content includes new skills, support gems, items, balance changes, bug fixes and microtransactions. In the long term, the devs hope to add a major expansion pack to the game every four months.
